With Peyton Manning signing in Denver, its obvious that there will be one major casualty of this whole tour de force. Not only will Denver have a brand new legend to cheer for, but Tebowmania in Denver is officially over. The Broncos have already said they would be trading the golden boy, and some analysts are saying they wont get much for his services.
Since the signing, Tebow’s cards have not taken a huge hit, even with many collectors believing that his days as a starting quarterback are over for the foreseeable future. That I don’t get. Maybe people feel a team out there, like Jacksonville or Miami will try to cash in on his history in the state.

Personally, I had no idea why so many people were going all in on a guy like Tebow, whose skill set is so different from the usual successful starter in the NFL. He was able to pull off a few miracle wins, but needed some major luck and coincidence to make it work. We saw what the future was going to be like for him in the games against the Patriots, especially in a division like the AFC West. Bottom line, the powers that be in Denver believed a very similar future was in store, and that was evident in their furious pursuit of Manning.
Im not saying Peyton is going to be even close to where he was during his recent years with the colts. For me, I am taking a downgraded Peyton Manning over whatever Tim Tebow’s complete package turns out to be in a few seasons. Manning is worth that chance, especially with a budding defensive powerhouse and some nice additions through the draft in the next few years.
Manning isn’t the last piece to the puzzle in big-D, but he is a great piece to fit into the scheme. As one of the most intelligent football minds ever, its rare that he wont be able to make a system a winner, a fact that is only hindered by injury potential. Manning’s neck is fragile at best, and that is a scary thought when your next guy on the chart is Adam Weber.
Tebow will land somewhere, and Im sure he will get another shot. However, for collectors, I cant say that buying any more of his cards is a good idea. I actually have no idea why any investors would have held the cards during that win streak, but im sure there are a few people who have. The ship has sailed, and it might be a long time before it comes back to port.
It was a perfect storm for Tebow at Denver last year. A mediocre starter in Orton who eventually got traded and no good backups. Plus, a coaching staff that was willing to change their offensive scheme to suit Tebow’s “strengths.”
Maybe he will find the same situation at Miami or Jacksonville, but I would hate to see him at Jacksonville. I think Blaine Gabbert could develop into a good NFL starter with a little more game experience under his belt. If Tebow lands there, Gabbert might play 3-4 games max (especially if they lose most of them) before he’s replaced for the year by Tebow.
I own a few Tebow rookie cards that I pulled from packs, none of them nice auto’s or auto patch cards. That’s good enough for me. I wouldn’t waste $100+ on an auto’d Tebow rookie. For that kind of coin I could purchase an nice auto’d card of an established MLB, NBA, or NFL star. Not wasting my money on a gimmick who caught lightning in a bottle one year.
