Lately, I have noticed a new trend on eBay, mainly due to the amount of publicity that fake patches have gotten. I have always said that people who create fakes are the douchiest of the douchiest douchebags in the hobby, but it seems as though the people who create huge amounts of obvious ones are declining in number. I would guess its because profitability has dropped since the companies have diluted the pool with many more logo patches than before, but also because so many people stay away from the cheaply made obvious ones.
Does that stop people from trying and/or buying these “works of card art?” No. It still happens all the time, unfortunately. Despite the fact that it still happens, asshats like Kevin Burge and Ufjumper7, mass marketers of fakes, have become more the minority lately. Instead we have a lot more people like this guy, who sells a handful of obvious fakes and really poses little threat in the grand scheme of things. Hell, when you see cards like he has, it makes you wonder if he was the poor sap who fell for the scam, or was he the actual scammer. Regardless, these cards need to be taken down, and that’s where we step in.
Check out this Emmitt Smith card, as an example. Whomever created it knew they could beat the system, mainly because its Exquisite and its low numbered. But, the informed collectors know that logos never show up in these cards, and they definitely don’t show up looking like that.
Same thing goes for this Ryan Klesko and Andruw Jonescards. Obviously, they are labeled “Jersey Prime” as to avoid the obvious fake detection, and low numbered, but still so utterly questionable that it is impossible to even think that they could possibly be real.
This Ichiro logo patch? Not even worth consideration. This Pujols from the same set? Cmon, this isnt my first rodeo. This Carson Palmer is laughable, and this Carlos Lee is worse. Bottom line, the guy has a ton of fakes, but he hasn’t made it into the same zip code as people like we had before.
This unrelated seller is falling into the same category, and he is a guy who actually sells some legit stuff along with idiot stuff like this. Bascially, when all is said and done, its your responsibility to invoke your own internal bidding censor, and don’t get tripped up falling for a card that even has a tiny bit of doubt.
Great article – Just curious – what do you think about this Emmitt patch?:

hard to say, there are logos in that product, not sure if they were in that subset though. He has no other questionable stuff up, so it could be legit.
I would think that it is likely the Smith is real, I know the cards to 5 have the reebok logo patches in them, so this would not be out of the question. And on the Exquisite quad patch of Emmitt Smith, I wonder how much damage some of the sides have, because there has to be damage somewhere on that card in order to fake it like that
I figured as much with the LCM Smith. Although likely is the best term I would assign to the immortals despite the Reeboks /5.
Thanks guys
A fake Pujols Auto “BUYBACK” … sad.
