A Pristine Example of Michael Vick Mania

I commented a few months ago that Michael Vick mania has restarted thanks to some MVP caliber performances this year in Philidelphia. Although he still acknowleges the demons from his past, he also realizes that it is truly a blessing to be back in the good graces of the fans. I think that is commendable. Collectors, much like the fans, have re-embraced Vick as well, and recently, a card has surfaced that is showing just how much they want him.

Aside from my feelings of how much grading is a scam, you have to appreciate this BGS 10 SP Authentic Auto Patch with the old BGS label. Old labels, from what I have read on messageboards are consdered to be more valuable, especially the higher than mint grades like this one has. Although the patch looks a little suspect to me, the card will never be questioned, and the price it is receiving illustrates that point.

This could easily get over $7,500, and could reach higher if he flies the Eagles all the way to Dallas in February. Personally, its not something I would spend that kind of cheese on, even if I had it to spend, as Vick has yet to show long term sustainability in the hobby, and his past will always be a factor in any investment a collector or team is willing to make. The Eagles have already talked about the Franchise tag for him if the labor dispute is remedied, but he may end up somewhere else if the lockout happens as expected. Phildelphia is playing like they did back in their Super Bowl year with TO, and I don’t think there are many teams that will be able to stop their high flying offense. However, will this continue to be true for the rest of Vick’s career? That is the true question.

  1. Bro I know your not a grading fan… But most of the time BGS gets it right on their “Pristine” grades… Anybody can cherry pick a few bad cards that got graded, but for the most part they do a good job.. And obviously the public appreciates their services hence the price the Vick card is at already lol

  2. Well I’ve read your other posts about this topic and it just seemed like you were hating? I respect your opinion and all… And really like your blog by the way, but what are these “reasons” you speak of? Just because they might give better grades here and there for publicity on big time cards isn’t the end of the world! It’s not like those type of cards (example: BGS 10 Montana) are in most collectors price range anyways lol! So how is it effecting us??? Getting publicity even if it’s just grading is good for the hobby period! You want to know why most people have no problem spending top dollar on gem mint+ cards Gelman? It’s because most all of the raw cards left out there are in bad condition! So most of the time if a collector wants a mint card then grading is the best way to go! Plus the holders protect the card.. And I’d be willing to bet if millions of people requested a SCU Grading service and were willing to pay for your services Gelman you’d probably sell out your beliefs and all of the sudden think grading is important! Don’t be a hater to this extent man! If you truly aren’t a fan of grading then simply don’t buy them and you will have no problem… And NO that Vick patch is not a fake.. And again I’m a fan of your website.. I just think being negative 24/7 over something that you have no control of is an unhealthy way to be.. Take care

  3. The guy is a douchebag as far as Im concerned, and I wouldn’t spend a penny on any of his cards. I prefer to love animals, and not torture them.
