If you don’t know my feelings on Tim Tebow, you havent really been reading this site very closely. Personally, I consider myself to be among the people who defintiely do not think Tim Tebow should be getting all the attention he has gotten/will get. He never looked like an NFL ready QB, something that was echoed by many of the scouts who looked at him prior to the draft, and yet because of his “character” and his “winning ability”, two things that have no bearing on success in the NFL, he was taken very high by the Denver Broncos. He has sat on the bench for practically the entire season, with a few exceptions, mainly because Kyle Orton has been the one bright spot for the team up until he was injured last week. This set the stage for Tebow’s first NFL start, and as you can expect, the world stopped as game time approached.
Never in the history of the NFL has late first round pick received as much attention as Tebow has gotten, and after a big 1st quarter yesterday, its obvious that the attention isnt really going anywhere. Although I hate Tim Tebow with a passion for a lot of reasons, I cant deny that his success is good for the hobby as a whole. Yes, I will not hesitate to admit that. Right now, the 2010 Rookie Class is selling quite weak outside of Sam Bradford, and having a guy like Tebow with a huge bullseye on his back, will no doubt be good for the value of upcoming products. The original top value guys like Mathews, Spiller, Clausen and company have all had disappointing results in terms of selling power and field performance, and that has not been good when opening anything. Because of his college success, Tebow was selling high, and that was sure to deflate if he continued to sit on the bench. Although his performance wasn’t GREAT, it was definitely passable, and that has led to a spike in his sales. Check out these recently ended auctions:
2010 Topps Chrome Dual Auto with John Elway /5
2010 Topps Chrome Refractor Auto /50 BGS 10
2010 Topps Prime Booklet Patch Auto /20
2010 Topps Rookie Premiere Auto /90 BGS 9.5
Basically, as much as I hate him, his personal viewpoints, and the level of coverage he gets, I am not going to sit here and say that it would be better if he failed. Products arent selling like they used to, mainly because Topps and Panini have decided to throw creativity to the wind, and I have a distinct feeling that Tebow could be the key to upcoming successes of products that actually matter. Five Star and National Treasures are both slated with an MSRP over 400 dollars, and if you don’t have more than one guy like Sam Bradford, things are going to be brutally terrible. The Broncos have already said that Tebow will finish out the year as starter, lets just hope, for the sake of future wax, that he does amazing.
Go Tebow, People hate just to hate lol….
But the only logical thing you have said about Tebow is correct, he needs to succeed, What he can do for (positive or Neg) can be big….
Even as a Broncos fan this guy cant live up to the hype. I’d like to believe in him but her just looks like a boy playing a mans game.
I dont understand why you act like its Tebows fault everyone feels this way. He didnt say he wanted to be a 1st rounder. He didnt tell everyone to pick him based on his “outstanding” character, I agree with almost 100% of the things you say…but a “hate” for someone that is just being himself is kind of pathetic. If you dont like his style of play fine…if you dont like the broncos and want him to fail…fine…but leave the kid alone…its like your saying he has to be a complete asshole or a thug for you to like him.
I’m with you on that Randy. It’s kind of pointless to pass hobby judgement on Tebow when he hasn’t really even made his debut. He’s a rookie, a blank with no good or bad to show at this point. His personal views are exactly that; personal. The only reason we know about them is because a bunch of nosy sports writers splashed it all over the place.
