How Recent Downfalls Affect Favre’s Viking Card Values

From the looks of it, Brett Favre’s career is over, at least as a member of the Minnesota Vikings. In the first half of a complete and utter blowout, Favre suffered a “head injury” that knocked him out of the game. If the Vikings proceed as planned, he will most likely spend the rest of the two game schedule on the sidelines. The Bears game was the last home game for the Vikings this year, and due to the Metrodome disaster, it wasn’t even played indoors. With a VERY tough game coming up against the high flying Eagles, I don’t see a reason to risk permanent damage by going out there and getting destroyed by the fierce pass rush that Philly has cocked and ready to fire. The Vikings’ offensive line is in shambles, and you know that last night’s slam by Wooton will not be the final experience Favre has if he goes back out.

Considering how poorly Favre has played this year, does it at all diminish the value he has for cards picturing him in a Vikings uniform? Loaded question isnt it? Personally, I think Favre’s massive success last year still carries enough clout to overshadow the tarnished record he displayed this year. He is still a first ballot hall of famer, and arguably, last season was his best in a long time. For a while, Favre’s Vikings cards were far outselling those of him in Packers gear, and I don’t think that will change. It has little to do with actual performance, and more to do with the number produced as well as the rabid Vikings collectors that are out there.

I have reviewed recent completed auctions of Favre’s Vikings cards, and although there is somewhat of a drop off in the value, it isnt all that significant. The loss comes in potential, as a huge season this year would have shot these cards’ values into a ridiculous realm of buying. Basically, Favre’s autos will always carry value because of his career acheivements, but they definitely could have been worth a ton more.

Here are some recent examples that illustrate what I am talking about:

2010 Gridiron Gear Auto Patch /5

2010 Certified Patch Auto /4

2010 Threads Base Auto /5

2010 Certifed FOTG Jersey Auto /4

2010 Triple Threads Jersey Auto /9

2010 Triple Threads Jersey Auto 1/1

In the end, when all is said and done, the 2009 season will always be remembered for the Vikings’ huge successes and epic failure in the championship game. Favre’s 2010 season will barely be a blip on the radar. If you are worried about investing in a Favre card, don’t be, his popularity will always be there to support any initial investment. Be forewarned that there just isnt much potential anymore for gain.
