Topps Releases Further Info On 2011 Rising Rookies

Topps released further info on 2011 Rising Rookies that is set to hit shelves around the draft, including some of the checklist. Now that I am seeing some of the additional hit cards in the product, im not as enthusiastic as I was when the Bradford Patch was revealed a few weeks ago. Although I think that these cards will most likely sell well because they are on card and because the beginning of the season gets people’s engines revving, it isnt due to anything but that.

A few people mentioned that Rising Rookies looks a lot like a Panini product, and I actually agree somewhat. I don’t think its half as bad as some of the crap that has displayed the Panini brand, but I get that vibe in some respects, especially with the Peterson from the preview. Topps is also bringing in the manupatches from what I see, but the autos will be signed on card, rather than on some stupid piece of fabric or whatever. Outside of that, I cannot stand helmet off shots, and that is where Leaf has these products beat. I don’t need Cam Newton’s mug on my card, that is not how he is branded as a football player. It looks horrid, and I never understood people that wanted to collect cards like that. From my experience, baseball collectors are a lot more accepting of shots like that because of the way Baseball players are branded, but for me, I will pass.

When all is said and done, products like this will serve absolutely no purpose in the continuing value of the 2011 Card Season. I mean, no one would even think of busting something like Prestige or other early products now, as the secondary market literally crashes as soon as the good products hit the market. The one spoiler to products like this is Upper Deck, as they have a legitimate opportunity to kill everyone’s expectations for their college license. They need to get their draft based 2011 products out NOW before people have licensed stuff to buy, and I am wondering if that will happen.

Regardless of how many products populate the calendar pre-draft or post-draft, success will hinge on one specific horrible thing looming:

Will there be football in 2011?

If yes, proceed as normal. IF NO, we are all doomed to a life where cards may take a dive they wont return from.

Here are the images from the preview:

  1. The hobby doesn’t need anymore of those manufactured logo shield patches. Too many people try to convince collectors they’re real.

  2. Looks okay I like the bradford and the Bryant, but the rookies are eh. And because it is a rookie product, that is what it is all about, so ill pass. Like every year though i wait the whole year and let all the products go down by 10-20% than buy because i don’t care about card value i actually care about the cards.

  3. IF there is no FB in 2011-12, things may not be all doom and gloom. I know for a fact that, during a normal NFL season, players on IR tend to do ANYTHING they can to supplement their income (since roster/performance bonuses are not earned). I believe a lockout season will drive MANY players to sign more than they usually would. Sure, there would be no rookie class, but there would probably be some great veteran/legend products.

  4. The Bradford, Bryant, and Peterson cards look pretty sweet. Not so sure about the rookie cards.
