The One Where Triple Threads is Previewed Again and I Hate It

Topps released images from Triple Threads football today, and for what seems like a lifetime, nothing is really changing on the main hits form the product. Its still sticker autos in a very expensive box. Its still die cut windows that spell out lame jokes and player nicknames. Its still the same product it was back in 2007 for football and 2006 for baseball. I just feel as though this product doesn’t get any better with age. It’s the opposite of fine wine.

Even better, is that because Topps has been running this release into the ground, seemingly every year, all the worthy NFL players have already had the Triple Threads treatment. Because the content and design look relatively identical each year, wouldn’t a different configuration be a better idea? Topps has often said that despite the polarizing relationship that some collectors have with the product, it does have a die hard following. Although I fail to see how anyone with the power of sight can like these cards, its not surprising to me when I see how much product Panini sells each year.

What if Topps cut the Veterans and HOFers out of this product, pushed the release to December, and focused on getting hard signed rookie autos for the set? Drop the price to 100 and below, pack it out like inception, and give the new NFL rookies the Triple Threads treatment each year. Two autos and a jersey a box should be enough to draw people in, and they can continue their love affair with unusual stats and phrases cut into jersey windows.

I do appreciate that the player photos are getting bigger, so I am not going to complain about that. I could not stand that the Triple Threads logo was bigger than the players at times, and I am similarly glad they got rid of those hideous “XXIV” booklet cards.

I have been told there are some great surprises in store for this product to make it worth buying for people like me, but I am not going to hold my breath. I may just never like this product, even if they revamp it. Its just spite for years of past transgressions I guess. In that case, carry on Topps, carry on.

  1. It has to have SOME kind of following. I can never afford to get my Aaron Rodgers cards from this set, even out of 27. They always go obscenely high, even though I can usually pick up Rodgers /25 patches from other products for around $30. So there’s got to be some draw there, although I don’t know what it is.

  2. Ugh! One of the Topps products I hate the most! It’s basically the same design every year and it’s been going on for how long? Since 2006? Two lame hit cards and a bunch of boring base for $200. Rip-off city! Topps has so many better products now, I wish they would just go ahead and scrap Triple Threads.

  3. They couldn’t even spell “Griffin” right! Only busted a box of this, and although I did well, I sold all the cards and never touched it again. There’s something about this product…. you feel cheated for opening it.
