An MVP Style First Look at 2011 Topps Five Star!

Something just arrived in my email box from an unknown address, and I was shocked to open it and find something I have been waiting for over recent days and months. I dont think I am supposed to have these photos, but I am glad that I get to share them with all of you.

Over the last few weeks, I have mentioned a number of times how valuable Aaron Rodgers has become in the hobby. Even more important is that over the last few years, his signature has gone from rare to less rare, but his on card signature has gone from rare to rarer. Topps Five Star, to this point so far, is the only set that continues to use hard signed cards from non-rookie players. In fact, if there was one thing I heard last year, it was that they wanted A LOT MORE FIVE STAR TO GO AROUND.

Being a Vikings fan, its tough to talk about the success of the Packers without getting a little downtrodden. However, it is obvious that they have a HUGE collector base and a huge fan base in the NFL. When I saw that Topps had a signing recently with Aaron Rodgers, I hoped that we would reap the benefits as collectors in future sets.

Here is the world premiere of the first hard signed cards from the set:

Personally, I think they look incredible, as they always do. Not only is the design top notch, but the look of the card finally speaks to the high end nature of what Five Star will bring to collectors. Hopefully, in the future, we will see much more of these types of forays into a world where stickers are a thing of the past.

Basically, if I were at Panini right now, I would be on the horn trying to figure out why it is taking them so long to even come close to the same zip code as to where these cards are. Its the difference between driving a Kia and tooling around in a Ferrari in my opinion.

Amazing work by Topps.

  2. I agree with you 99.9% of the time on most designs. But these look weak, They look fine, but just that, fine, Not incredible. Is the gorgeous play of Aaron Blinding you?

  3. I have to wait until Feb. for these? OMG. Hall of Famer on card autographs. Can’t wait.

  4. The Rodgers 1/1 book has some weak “patches” for a high end product.

  5. I like the first two, but the last two (the 1/1 and the ring of honor) leave a lot to be desired IMO. The 1/1 has 3 plain white jersey pieces and looks to be damaged already (along the bottom in the red) and the ROH is the exact same design as the last few years and belongs in Chrome not 5 Star. I know this is just a taste, but I already don’t like 50% of the cards.

In the interest of full disclosure, I would still be ecstatic if any of those showed up in my break…

  6. I hope that is the A Rodgers ring of honor Im getting for the redemption I submitted from 2011 base Topps.

They blew the continuity of the set when they put Brees in 5 star last year

  7. these cards suck. Where’s the single color event used jersey? Why isn’t there a space with nothing done graphic design-wise to accommodate said jersey. I mean there’s no foil board and the auto isn’t on a shiny butt ugly stick with a giant white box around it. I can hardly see the dang sig. This is why panini is just so much more worth the money. Good try tho topps. Lmk when topps brings out the sick MoJo111!1111!

  8. The patch auto looks to be dinged up pretty badly in the bottom right corner. The booklet looks like it was from Topps Supreme. Last year’s earthtones, slates, and blues in the background created some truly classic looking cards. Too much red in these. I will reserve judgment fir a larger preview, thanks for sharing this!
