Every year at the rookie premiere, there are up to 30 jerseys worn by any given player. In just about every case, the players are handed a stack of home and away jerseys, which they slip on over their head, wear for a few seconds, and then slip off. This is the main reason why I don’t buy ANY event used jersey card that doesn’t have an autograph, as the jersey swatch really has no worth to someone like me if it isnt game used.
Subsequently, because Jerseys are expensive, and just about every one will be cut up into small unrecognizable pieces, the name or number on the back doesn’t need to match the player who is wearing it. In some cases, the manufacturers use older players and throwback jerseys at the premiere to spice it up, but they rarely use a different STYLE, just a different PLAYER. As a result, the ones in which a different STYLE of throwback is used have become a tad more valuable, especially for people who player collect.
This has frequently made for scammers trying to swap out the legit, one color non-throwback swatches with multi colored or logo swatches from a more desirable throwback jersey. For 2007 cards, Adrian Peterson and Sidney Rice were a main target because of their immediate and continued success. This led to a lot of douchebags out there trying to alter their cards to make money, but not having the smarts to understand what patch to use. In 2006, the Vikings switched to their current uniforms, which meant that the old jerseys with the HUGE Viking head patches went away. It was replaced with a quarter sized logo, one that didn’t lend itself well to filling up an entire jumbo swatch window the way many fakers used to do it. Citing that the manufacturers used a Vikings throwback at the premiere, these idiots sold card after card with the fake HUGE Viking head logos to unsuspecting people. What they didn’t understand, was that Peterson and Rice didn’t wear any old Vikings jerseys at the premiere, and yet they still succeeded in their goals because the player collectors couldn’t fight quickly enough.
The worst part is that these cards are coming back around, and again people are too clueless to do any google searches for articles or posts on these cards. Check it out, and notice the RIDICULOUS final prices on these fakes:
2007 Absolute Viking Head Jumbo Patch /10
2007 Exquisite Viking Head Rookie Auto Patch /299
2007 Absolute Viking Head Jumbo Patch /25
Similarly, there are now a few Jets cards from 2009 SP Authentic and Exquisite that are starting to surface with the Navy and Gold throwback swatches, despite there not being any throwbacks of that sort being worn at the 2009 Rookie Premiere. This is solely a ploy to get people to buy a less desirable card because it now has a rarer, more desirable patch.
Guys, before you buy any card, make sure to look at any others from the print run. Why even risk a red flag at that point?
I love how the beckett grading is supposed to make the jets card legit. Either way why would a company use that color for swatches in only one card of the 999 card print run. Major red flag there even for an unseasoned buyed.
Out of curiosity, how do you know which jerseys were worn at each rookie premiere? (obviously the cards you cited are ridiculous fakes, especially the vikings, but do you get a list somewhere of the jerseys that were worn or just figure it out because like Bob said, there wouldn’t be just one “off-color” patch out of /999)
For the last three years I have gotten a list of the jerseys worn from a person who has been on the field, and for the Vikings one, I have confirmed with the manufacturers.
watch out for this seller: http://cgi.ebay.com/PAUL-KONERKO-09-TOPPS-CAREER-BEST-JUMBO-LOGO-PATCH-20-/130485493847?pt=US_Baseball&hash=item1e618aa057
i was just curious to know if these were in fact fakes, why these sellers are still in business and still have perfect feedback ratings?? i am trying to contact 1 of the sellers now to investigate this alittle further, i am very curious to see what they have to say. i also am glad that i collect only hockey, and i only want the cards if they are auto’d, the jersey doesnt really do anything for me, especially since they just wear them for ‘photo shoots’. some of the prices and frauds i have seen are really bad knockoffs, the corners are bent back, creased, and so on. people can def tell. take time and look at your cards and be sure to know the run print for what you buy!! Doing alittle homework will just save you the headache down the road!
