Today was a career day for Lions’ Running Back Jahvid Best, despite the fact that this is only his second game on the field. On top of scoring ANOTHER two touchdowns on the ground, he managed 150+ yards receiving and a third TD for the week. In fact, his game was so tremendous, that you actually have go back quite far to find a rookie that had a game as good as he did today. As expected, Best’s cards have exploded further on eBay than they already have, going from a respectable amount to a ridiculous amount in the matter of one game. Much like Arian Foster’s amazing performance last week, this one game may make Best into one of the most valuable rookies of the entire year, even if he doesnt cross the goal line again for the rest of the season.
Lets travel back in time to 2007, when a rookie named Adrian Peterson stepped onto the field against the Chargers. Before the game, his cards were, like Best’s near the top of the class, but not close to where they were when the dust settled at the end of the game. Peterson had set an NFL record for rushing yards in a single game, and had managed three scores along the way. Peterson’s cards jumped so high that they were almost un-buyable after the weekend came to a close. Because of continued production, AD has become one of the NFL’s top card values, and even if he were to lose some of said production, he probably wouldnt drop too far as long as he stayed on the field. That’s what one game can do to a player.
Best, as an attendant of the Rookie Premiere, will have as many autographs as any other player this year, and may not even be a part of the SP’ed top tier of signatures in some cases. As his autograph continues to climb in value, he could easily overtake some of the guys who were expected to be much more valuable, permanently. It will definitely hurt that he plays on one of the worst teams in the league, but he will have something that some of the 09 rookies still dont have – production equal to some of the other’s full first season in two games.
Arian Foster is in a completely different situation, mainly because he was an undrafted free agent last year. Because he has so few signed cards, his signature’s limited availability will drive cost as much as his one game of greatness. Also, due to the fact that he doesnt have first rounder status, some collectors may treat him more like Jerome Harrison after his massive game from last year with the Browns.
Overall, Best has shown that he was worth the Lions’ trading up to get him, especially with all the question marks surrounding 2008 third round pick Kevin Smith. Best may never have the following that Adrian Peterson has secured, but he will no doubt command top dollar as long as he stays healthy.
Kevin Smith was a 3rd round pick, not a first.
My bad, didnt know what I was thinking.
