The Biggest WTF Moment of the Year So Far

I rarely take the time out of my day to comment on one specific subset of one specific product. However, this one is so fucking hilarious that I feel the need to bring this to the attention of my readers. Guys, I have found the biggest subset fail I have ever seen in the history of cards. It is literally the worst possible thing that could ever have been inserted into a pack, and leave it to Panini to make 8 different parallels of it.

Without further adieu, I give you Panini Limited’s Initial Steps:

Get it? Its called initial steps because they are new players in the league AND they are sitting on steps! See what they did there? I mean, as if the creepy pictures of the players sitting on steps giving come hither glances wasn’t enough, they had to give it a name like “Initial Steps.” I cant make this shit up. I was so shocked that they did something like this that I didn’t know what to say. My wife was looking over my shoulder and blurted out, “did they catch them after giving out ‘free ice cream’ from their windowless vans?” Yeah, looks like they did.

I am not kidding in the slightest, this be-foilboarded subset was seriously created and inserted for hobby consumption. I have never seen something that is both funny ha-ha and funny sad in such an obvious way.

Wow. Just wow.

  1. It looks like senior pictures from high school. You know, the ones our moms made us have done that we wish never happened.

  2. Seriously, panini has no ideas left. The pictures look like high school pictures, creepy poses edition. Panini, you failed again and will never learn how to design good cards.

  3. I wish we could interview the players and ask what they thought of being asked to pose on the steps. You are dead on about the creep factor as Ryan and Tim both appear to be asking the audience to join them in their hideaway at the top of the steps. They should have just dressed them in big poofy baby clothes with big bonnets and a big pacifier and made them toddle around as if they were taking their real first steps. That might have been less embarassing.

  4. Panini CEO: Guys I got it…the best insert set ever made… Players holding babies. We’ll call it. Year 1.

Yes Men: Oh yeah, great idea. Thats even better than players on steps!

  5. Should be called ‘smoke break’.

How long before the insert set of borderline HOF players called ‘Hall Monitors’.

  6. They should have just photoshopped their heads onto a babies crawling body and jammed the football in a shitty diaper. First steps. I don’t understand these companies and their creative, just plain junk. Hire some professionals you morons!

  7. Still not as bad as those stupid Leatherhead cards that your precious UD did in SPA a few years ago. Thought so. Now be quiet, big man.

  8. Im not going to disagree with you there on how stupid those Leatherhead cards were. They were terrible. These are worse.

  9. Have to agree these are worse, the leatherhead crap was nasty/horrible, but these have that with a touch of creepy, grow up “chris” trying to get back at someone pff pathetic……

  10. I didn’t think when I started reading your blog that I would get so many laughs, but this was a good one. Thank you. The resell value on these might be pretty high if you use them to blackmail the players in a few years. Way to go Panini.
