Topps Five Star is Gearing Up For a Legendary Release

I got an inside report on Five Star football today, and I must say, I am even more excited at its release that is coming up this Wednesday. Listings should be popping up later tonight and all day tomorrow, but after hearing about the contents of the product, it looks like the this could be one of the most epic singles products ever produced. The boxes are Tins with mini boxes nested inside, much like Exquisite was last year, and I hope the tins look cool. Collectible tins are a lost art in this hobby, hopefully these are awesome.

In each box, there are 6 cards, four of which are hits, and this includes one book auto, one patch auto, one regular auto, two base /79 and one other jersey or auto card. From the early reports, there is no junk scrub auto to weigh things down even more. Even though I hate booklet cards, I think the hard signed ones in Five Star are the best looking ones that Topps has ever done, and they should bring considerable value. The patch autos look tremendous, even with the small swatch windows, and we all know about the inscriptions. Now that there are not as many junk autos that take up a slot per box like NT and Exquisite have done in years past, it adds much more possibilities for a good box. There will definitely be duds, as there are with every product, but the chase will drive this product. Cases are already up 275 dollars from pre-sell, and I expect that to rise even further.

This doesn’t spell good news for National Treasures and the almost 100% sticker content, minus the RAPs and Pen Pals, especially now that Five Star should pave the way from a larger on card offering next year from Topps. Remember, this year was all done on the fly because of the licensing issues that plagued the beginning of 2010 for the brand, and with more prep for next year, the sky will hopefully be the limit.

As soon as auctions start hitting, ill keep all of you posted on what is up.

  1. I feel so left out of these high end cards. I can’t even afford them. The only chance I have is getting the single cards on ebay.

  2. Same here man. I wish I could find a group break to join or something. The boxes are just way out of my price range. But I have to say the cards look sick. To me these are the beat hard signed cards since 2009 SP Authentic football. The inscriptions I have seen are amazing. Topps gets two thumbs way up on this one.

  3. man looks great sucks though how much boxes like that cost. I will probably wait a year or a year and a half and than get a box as the price goes down.

  4. Sweet I’m definitely interested. What is the break format a how much do you think it will be?

  5. To all the little babies around the hobby crying, “the price! The price!” stick a bottle in your mouth and suck it up. You are NOT the target audience of this product and will quite likely NEVER be the target audience. Gelman has it right when he says he doesn’t care about box value as long as people are busting it and selling singles. These boxes/cases are for: the wealthy who don’t fret over box to box realized “value”, group breakers hoping to give each other a little taste, and degenerate gamblers who are so far behind they think they’re ahead. Anyone else who buys in will be on suicide watch 90% of the time.

  6. Yeah, I dont get all the people saying “these cards are great, but too bad its out of my price range.” Give me a break, it all depends on what you want to get out of it. If you want to buy 8 cases, sorry, its out of your price range. However, if you want a couple of singles, unless you collect AP, Bradford or Tebow, you can easily pick up some nice cards for the price of a normal box.

  7. Lets all get out of the dream world we live in and in the end you we will all realize that cards, which if you look at it with prospective, are just pieces of cardboard with some color and an autograph of a regular person( well except for the fact that he can buy my house with one paycheck he is a regular person) So when you look at it with perspective you realize that the prices for these boxes is insane, I mean 500$ is enough to last almost a months worth of food, and we spend it on some cardboard with some pen writing. So with all respect for these rich people who can afford to spend 1500$ on a case just like that, look at it and see how crazy the prices are. I get it it is a hobby and all hobbies cost a fortune, but come on, look how expensive this is. Don’t get me wrong i love cards, i buy cards, but subconsciously in know this is true. So don’t mock others just because they have obligations and responsibility with their money, and cant afford to spend half of their kids private school tuition on a box of cards.
