Topps Supreme? Seriously? You have got to be kidding me. No? This is legit? Holy crap.
After seeing the images posted on their facebook page, these cards just look to be another high end example of Topps’ design team’s epic cold streak. I mean, I see these cards and all I think is that Topps just doesnt care anymore. I would expect that this box will cost more than any other product Topps has released in the last four years just based on the pictures, and I must say that seeing the stickers being used AGAIN for a product like this is completely ridiculous. Then you see that many of the cards in this set look exactly like Triple Threads combined with the horrible parts of 2009 Exquisite, and you just want to put your face directly into your palm. More booklets, more tiny pictures, more bordered elements, snore, ZzZzZzZz.
Not all the cards are horrible, but good god, is there really a need for ANOTHER set like this? It just makes it painfully evident how little Topps has when trying to live up to the past standards set by products like Exquisite, Ultimate and SPA.
I sincerely hope that someone gets around to feeding the sell sheets of Topps’ low end products to the design team with the hopes that they will absorb some of the awesomeness from those sets. Its obvious that they can fool some of the people out there with promises of big patches and multi swatch player cards, but eventually the collectors are going to yawn, much like I do, each time one of these previews comes out. Im guessing the next set will be 2010 Topps Ridiculous, at least that’s what the product name pattern suggests.
EDIT: Im getting word that this product will be much closer to Ultimate in price point, and that there will actually be a much higher end product on the way. Even if the price point is around where Ultimate is, the cards still look terrible with the different things that I have mentioned above. If Topps actually thinks that something like this will fly for a Super High End product, I think from intial responses I have seen, people are finally starting to see through the shit.
I actually disagree with you. I think these are a nice design.
However, I wouldn’t touch these at all because I HATE STICKER AUTOS!
If Topps would release this set with on-card autos they would be SWEET!
I think that is my biggest gripe here too.
Can anyone explain how the red border on the Brees card makes any sense. Initially I was trying to figure out what 49er it was before I saw New Orleans Saints at the bottom in tiny letters. The Bradford is also horrible (a sticker auto in the middle of the card….no thanks). Having said that the Namath and Best (I know Gellman hates patches, but if the point of a patch card is the patch, well then the patch better be as big as possible…see the Charles booklet for how not to do one). Rest looks rather meh as rehashes of older sets.
Looks alright to bad all topps products look very similar. Oh and one more thing isn’t the patch on the Bradford a chargers patch.
videogameguru-
I am guessing that since it is a “player-worn” patch it is from a Rams throwback jersey they probably had Bradford throw on at the premiere.
The jahvid best looked good until I realized it was a DEAD ringer for the exquisite rookie autos from 09. The only difference of course is the lack of an auto because, to Topps’ dismay I’m sure, there was no room for a bordered sticker. “Waaaaat? No room 4 stikr??? Wat we do now???”
I’m in an mfa program for creative writing and one thing we preach is to study what you do well and apply it to what’s not working. Topps, as you’ve said a number of times, needs to examine what’s great about their lower end products and apply it somehow to their high end. Even if they did a product like ultimate where you got one pack with one hard signed chrome rookie or something, I’d be more willing to make my huge credit card balance even bigger. I mean, anything at this point would be an improvement. This is just a shame.
To be honest the booklet cards don’t bother me so much, but the letter thing drives me nuts. Who would be able to pack pull a full last name? No one. Once you’ve completed your fav players name in one product why would you want a second one? That’s the big flaw with letters.
Topps really needs to design high end sets better. This set already looks like a similar sticker auto version of exquisite. Most of all, the sticker autos bother me the most. Exquisite football had amazing cards with on card autos. The silver/gold foil stickers just look ugly. Low end topps is the way to go.
