After literally wearing out the F5 button on my keyboard in the hopes of discovering a new amazing card to buy, its officially getting to the point of sheer amazement over the ridiculousness of Five Star. I cant say enough good things about what Topps has accomplished with their first attempt at Super High End in four years, especially considering how horrid Paradigm was.
Even something as unimportant as the base autographs look tremendous, and so far, the non-rookie premiere scrub autos have been minimal to non-existant. For someone who hates booklets as much as I do, its even more surprising how much I like the booklet auto patches and the dual logo booklet autos. The true highlight of this product, however, is the Patch autographs, both veteran and rookie alike. Not only are they low numbered, but they are undoubtedly the best looking cards of the year. My only disappointment is that Peterson wasnt included in the set, something that I wholeheartedly wish was different. The inscription cards are just cherries on top of the sundae, made better by the fact that they include a ton of ones that have never been done before.
Topps is also putting a few extra chases in the product, offering bounties on certain cards that can be pulled. The first is a Tebow quad auto patch which can win you a nice prize over on the Topps blog. Although I dont think stuff like this is necessary on a high end product like this, it sure doesnt hurt.
Really all of this is irrelevant without something to compare it to, and I dont think National Treasures has a leg to stand on anymore. Panini created NT to compete with other products in the genre, and so far it has failed to live up in pretty much every way. Stickers versus hard signed, plain and incomplete looking jersey cards versus jumbo jerseys that look great, and oddly designed cards versus cards with epic designs deserving of the price tag. I understand that I overdo it when it comes to expressing my love for well conceived and well designed products like this, but I think it is only a testament to the BOREDOM I have been forced to endure all year long.
Although Topps has had its share of failures this year, unlike Panini, this product shows that Topps is finally getting the point. With an NFL licensed Exquisite gone, I compliment Topps for having the wits to know to step in. Not only that, but to step in with an amazingly successful first try is beyond commendable. Again, I know I overdo it, but this needs to be said.
Basically, this had better be Panini’s last year of sitting on their ass with a slate of ridiculously boring products that blur together. If they think they can sit idly by while Topps laps them at every turn, I have a feeling that the growing distaste for their cookie cutter junk will only intensify.
Real quick ā is it just me or do 90% of the five star cards on ebay look like they have bad corners? Has anyone owned any of these in person? Iām wanting to buy some super high-end bradfords and stuff but everyone I see (not the booklets, but the singles) look like they have chipped/rounded/ just plain bad corners. Is it the photos?
PS…don’t know if anyone has commented on this or not…but what’s the deal with virtually no Dez Bryant cards? He’s a huge hit so why not include him? Only major error I’ve seen so far.
I pulled the Tebow Quad patch numbered 15/20 today. I emailed them and am waiting for the response. I hope that I was the first person. The card is also on ebay under the same name that I am using here. Not plugging it just wanted to let you know. I want that helmet man!!!!Any way, thiproduct is very nice! Way better than I had expected. The tebow was the first major hit I got from box one, Box two I got a booklet quad auto of spiller, matthews, best and someone else lol. the tird and final box the major hit was a 2/5 bradford and tebow auto. It was great, best hits so far that I have ever gotten at once. I even got a Mike Williams redzone auto lol. I will take it, could have been worse.
While I do think the cards look amazing, why on earth is Aaron Rodgers not represented in this other than a base card? I’ve been waiting for his cards to surface, and only a few base cards have. I check the checklist and he doesn’t even have so much as a patch card??? I realize that when they were putting this together, the Packers probably were still in question to even make the playoffs, but Rodgers certainly already belonged in the top end of a set like this. For goodness sake, Clinton Portis has cards, but not Rodgers? Way to drop the ball on that one, Topps.
Has to do with Rodgers’ availability. From what I hear, he is a tough signature to get. That also includes his jerseys, so its also a tough patch to get. Sometimes, a player just doesnt make themselves available for new products – see Joe Mauer in baseball.
Ok so what is the BASE rookie card in FIVE STAR ?? There seems to be rookie autos /100 with no patch, then there are a couple rookie patch auto variations, as far as the numbering/set goes (i have’nt seen the backs of these cards) what are the base rookie auto cards ?
Thanks, former UD design team members! š
It’s a good looking product. I’ve never seen better high-end from Topps. The only disappointment are the “game used patches” that are simply jumbo jersey cards. In the case of the MJD cards the patches were obviously removed from the jersey for use elsewhere.

I think that all of the 5 Star cards tend to look similar. Panini has much better designs and ideas. Give me a choice, I’ll go NT all the way. Plus they have Montana, Bryant, Rodgers, etc.
Topps 5-Incomplete.
This is a great looking product with some really nice looking cards, but does any else see a problem with someone pulling a Tebow auto and still losing money on a box? It just shows that the price is too high. I mean you could get 4.20 boxes of Plates & Patches for the price of just one Topps 5 Star box. I am not saying that Plates & Patches is nearly as nice as Topps 5 Star, but what I am saying is that it’s not 4.20 times as good. You get 4 or 5 hits in one box of P&P and you get 5 hits in Topps 5 Star. Now the question is would you rather have 17 to 21 hits of P&P or 5 hits of Topps 5 Star? If you were just looking to get cards for you PC or wanted to have a chance at a hug score I would say Topps 5 Star, however if you were playing the odds of having a better chance of making a profit, I would go with P&P. I fight this battle with myself all the time. I can buy a case of cheap stuff for like a few hundred dollars and turn a profit on it, but sometimes it can be a little boring opening a bunch of the same junk.
did u know the charles woodson has an error on it has wrong stats and college on back it has peyton hillis stats on back not woodson what can be done let me know thnks
