Sometimes, the cost of a box contributes directly to the cost of the singles contained within the product. They could be the ugliest cards in the world, but if they come from a high end product, they will be valuable regardless of design. Panini has banked on this for four years and change.
With the release 2011 Bowman Sterling, Topps had to have understood that the cost of the packs would directly contribute to the high end hits holding more value than better looking hard signed cards from earlier in the year. The general consensus is that Inception produced some of the best designed sets of the entire year, and yet, because of availability and pack price, they arent as valuable. Brand loyalty of a new product is low, so that will also factor in.
The top valued rookie of the year, Cam Newton has been a relative ghost in Sterling, and his autos have been posted for RIDICULOUS prices. There are only two gold refractors up currently, and one completed autograph of the base card. Not one single other card with Cam Newton as the sole subject has surfaced in the five days since go-live. That is not right.
Here are the ones to take a look at. Its a sticker auto on all of them, which makes me wonder why they would go for more than other cards with better designs:
Cam Newton Gold Refractor Auto Patch /25 – WOW, that is a huge price for a sticker.
Cam Newton Gold Refractor Auto Patch /25 #2
Cam Newton Pulsar Refractor Auto Patch /15 – Should have gone for a lot more.
This cant be an oversight, especially with a guy like Cam Newton and his popularity. The guy was all over Triple Threads, and the boxes cost 100 bucks less. THAT doesnt make sense. Im curious to see when more of these will pop up, if they pop up at all.
