If you arent familiar with Jose Bautista’s prominence over the last two seasons with the Blue Jays, you havent been paying attention to baseball. After having year after year of virtually no production, Bautista figured it out and clobbered over 50 home runs last year, seemingly out of nowhere. This year, that pace is back on, already socking 19 dingers in the first two months of the season. The turnaround is so dramatic, its like a sixth round draft pick quarterback coming in and out performing Peyton Manning.
As expected, the few of Bautista’s cards that exist have skyrocketed in value due to his remarkable performance. In fact, his RC Chrome Red Refractor /5 recently sold on eBay for an absolute crapload of money. So much money that Im not sure if people realize that Bautista is already 29 years old. Its not like he is 22 or even 24. Most of the prospects that generate that kind of money have 12-15 good years left in them. Its not even guaranteed that Bautista falls under that category for 10 more good years. Regardless if he does or he doesnt, dont you think it really isnt worth the risk?
If anything, this just goes to show how much people value the low numbered refractors out of a lower end set. You rarely see this type of value coming out of a card from a set that doesnt cost 200 bucks a box. In fact, a lot of the products that do cost 200 bucks a box STILL cant touch chrome baseball prices.
Regardless of the hobby status of Chrome, I still have to say that I would probably spend my money a little more wisely than this sale.
Thanks for a post about baseball cards.
Peace.
Agreed Chrome is King – Topps found a niche (with chrome) 15-16 years ago and it works.
what Topps seemed to do was take wildcard football concept (with the stripes) from the early 1990s and develop it into a game changer.
